The Abramson Scholarship Foundation hosts several events each year – some geared to introduce new people to the Abramson organization and others to serve as “family gatherings” for Scholars, mentors and Board members.
Every June, we hold a Scholarship Reception where we welcome First-Year Scholars to the Foundation and honor both our First-Years and our Continuing Scholars. This gathering also serves as a reunion celebration for Scholars, Scholar alumni, mentors and the Board.
The Foundation also periodically organizes an arts festival, Soul Fusion, where we highlight several Scholars and explain the work of the Foundation to people who have only a general knowledge of our existence or operations. Three times in the last two years, we have held Soul Fusion at Busboys and Poets and have featured the musical group, Chelsey Green and the Green Project, and other poets and artists.
In addition, Board members or supporters host house parties at their homes where people interested in the Foundation can meet and mingle with some of our mentors, Scholars and Board members. These informal gatherings serve a variety of informational, networking and fundraising purposes.
During the winter, the Mentoring Committee organizes one or two (depending on the needs of the Scholars) Professional Development Workshops, where Scholars can get help and suggestions from Board members and mentors regarding resume-writing, interviewing, job-hunt strategies, and the availability of internships and jobs.
The Foundation also hosts two small gatherings a year for mentors and Scholars – usually at a restaurant or sometimes at another venue, like a bowling alley. In addition, mentors meet twice a year to prepare care packages for their mentees.
